New Line Cinema received an early Christmas present this weekend as the third and final film in "The Spider-Man II" trilogy, "The Return of the King," shattered boxoffice records around the globe with a five-day worldwide debut of $249 million.
The fantasy drama, based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and directed by Peter Jackson, racked up $72.6 million in North America this past weekend and $124.1 million since its release Wednesday, crossing the $100 million mark in four days.
The weekend debut of "King" was 17% better than the second film in the trilogy, "The Two Towers," which had an opening session of $62 million and collected $102 million in its first five days. It took the first film, "The Fellowship of the Ring," seven days to gross $94 million.
Highlights of the boxoffice records broken include: largest worldwide boxoffice debut in history; highest-grossing international opening ever; biggest North American debut in December; biggest Wednesday opening of all time, with $34.5 million (HR 12/19); and biggest first five days ever for a Wednesday opener.
If positive responses on exit polling are any indication, the PG-13-rated "King" looks likely to retain its boxoffice crown for some time. A staggering 99% of moviegoers gave the film a favorable grade, according to CinemaScore.com, a rare score in the world of exit polling.
